Hollywood Community Foundation Honored Four ‘Women Of Distinction’
Globe Theatre on Thursday, May 8, 2008

The Hollywood Community Foundation honored Amy Elaine Wakeland, Carolyn Dye, Hilary Royce, and Laura Dodson at its 15th “Women of Distinction” Awards’ Luncheon on Thursday, May 8, at 12 p.m. at the Globe Theatre, Universal Studios Hollywood. Michael Taylor was honored with the Golden Award and former Miss America and actress Lee Meriwether were honored with the prestigious Mary Pickford Award.

“Hollywood’s Women of Distinction Awards” was established in 1993 by the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to salute the women in our community. Outgoing Chair, Jeff Briggs had this to say about last year’s Women of Distinction awards, “That we feel it necessary to give Hollywood businesswomen and female community leaders in Hollywood special recognition says more about the rest of  our region than it does about Hollywood, for Hollywood’s history is replete with female leadership and success.  It is a testament to businesswomen in Hollywood that we have given 98 of these awards in the past 13 years and still have no trouble finding more women to recognize for their contributions to our local businesses and community. I look forward to the day we no longer have to make a special effort to recognize successful female leaders, but until that day comes, Hollywood women will continue to show the rest of the city and county that business success and community leadership know no gender.”

The awards ceremony serves as one of two major fundraisers for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the lives of Hollywood community members. All funds raised from this luncheon will be awarded in the form of grants to local charitable organizations. Hollywood’s Women of Distinction Awards Committee is composed of the women members of the Chamber Board, past award winners and Hollywood’s women leaders who are members of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This year marked the 15th anniversary of the awards.

Executives, business owners, and leaders in the Hollywood Community. The awards are based on outstanding achievement and dedication to excellence within an industry, organization or profession, special accomplishments, and community service.

Honorees of 14th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon

Laura Dodson - 2008 Honoree of Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation 15th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon.laura dodson

A Cherokee Indian and third generation Angelino, Laura Dodson makes volunteering to the Hollywood Community a top priority.

In the late 80’s, when the drug problems of Hollywood reached critical mass, Laura did not sit idly by. Instead she organized “Beat Keepers” to eradicate drug dealing on Argyle. Working with law enforcement, Laura’s program helped to stem the tide of what seemed to be an intractable problem.

In Hollywood there is always more to do to improve the quality of life for its residents, so Laura became president of Argyle Civic Association to not only address the concerns of the neighborhood but to provide solutions, as well.

Keeping Hollywood clean and safe are hallmarks of Laura’s illustrious volunteer career. In 2004, she became a volunteer in CalTrans Adopt-a-Highway program to clean up the Hollywood Freeway along Franklin Avenue and she continues this hard work to this day.

As most stakeholders know, Hollywood has a problem with pigeons. Once again, Laura sprung into action by organizing Citizen Pigeon, a group dedicated to controlling the pigeon population by using a PETA approved birth control system. This project - that copied a similar effort in London – has attracted the support of the Hollywood community. The results are promising.

Carolyn A. Dye - 2008 Honoree of Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation 15th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon.carolyn A. dye

Carolyn Dye was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. She was admitted to the bar in Florida, Kentucky, the District of Columbia and California. Her practice specialty area is general business and corporate finance, advising individuals and businesses from formation through wind-up and dissolution.

In 2002, Carolyn attended an organizational meeting which began her involvement with Gay & Lesbian Elder Housing (GLEH). In that meeting the growing needs of the baby boomer GLBT population, particularly for affordable housing, was discussed. As a member of the original Board of GLEH, she has been intimately involved in shepherding the work of that organization, offering her pro bono legal services as well as participating in fundraising and serving as an officer, most lately as the Board Chair.

She also serves on the Board of the Police Activities League, a community-based crime prevention program that provides young people (ages 6-17) with positive alternatives to gangs and drugs.

Today’s Women Play Important Leadership Role in Hollywood
Hollywood women will continue to show the rest of the city and county that business success and community leadership know no gender.

Fourteen years ago, when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce instituted its Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon, Hollywood was a very different place. The Hollywood Chamber had never had a woman leader and many then considered the community to still be a “good old boys club”.

At the time, the Chamber instituted the luncheon to demonstrate the important role that women were playing in the community. The world is very different today, with women holding many key leadership roles in Hollywood. The Chamber has had four women chairs during that time – Julie Kleinick, Mary Lou Dudas, Christi Van Cleve, and Karen Diehl.

“It was such a novelty then,” reflected Julie Kleinick of A.F. Gilmore Co. about the progress that has occurred. “We’ve had so many great women chairs of the board since then, that it is nice to see the Chamber better reflecting the community. It is great to see so many women on the board and in leadership positions.”

“It is a testament to businesswomen in Hollywood that we have given 96 of these awards in the past 14 years and still have no trouble finding more women to recognize for their contributions to our local businesses and community,” stressed Jeff Briggs, the current Chamber chair. “I look forward to the day,” he continued, “when we will no longer have to make a special effort to recognize successful female leaders, but until that day comes, Hollywood women will continue to show the rest of the city and county that business success and community leadership know no gender.”

The annual Women of Distinction Luncheon has grown into one of the Chamber’s largest and most successful annual events, and this year is expected to be no different, according to co-chairs Maureen Schultz of Capitol Records and Laurie Goldman of GO! Goldman Organization.  This issue of the Hollywood Business Advocate is dedicated to the many women who contribute to making Hollywood a better community.

Stefanie Powers - 2006 Mary Pickford Award Honoree of Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation 13th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon.Actress Stefanie Powers was presented with the prestigious Mary Pickford Award. She makes the term “well-rounded” a severe understatement. Her acting credits include 28 feature films, three television series, and several mini-series including “Beryl Markham: A Shadow on the Sun,” which she also produced.

However, Stefanie’s charming and thoughtful real-life personality may most closely resemble stunning renaissance woman Jennifer Hart, the character she portrayed on the hit television series “Hart to Hart.” She has combined a natural curiosity and passion for knowledge, world travel and diverse cultures into both an award-winning acting career and an equally active life of heartfelt philanthropic work.

The cornerstone of that work is the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, a public charity dedicated to the preservation of wild animals, which Stefanie helped to found in honor of the late actor and for which she serves as president. The William Holden Wildlife Education Center, which currently serves 10,000 students a year, is located near the Mount Kenya Safari Club and the Mount Kenya Game Ranch started by Holden in the late 1950’s before conservation became a popular issue.

Stefanie is also involved with several American zoos (among them, the Cincinnati Zoo, Zoo Atlanta and the Los Angeles Zoo, for which she is a Fellow) where she works with species survival programs and has released four home videos, one on horseback riding, “Stefanie Powers’ Broadway Workout” and the recent “Power Pilates” and “Power Pilates2.” The pilates videos spawned the new book, “POWERS PILATES—Stefanie Powers’ Guide to Longevity and Well-Being Through Pilates.”

Marian Gibbons - 2006 Honoree of Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation 13th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon.MARIAN GIBBONS
Marian Gibbons first became interested in historic preservation in Elm Grove, Wisconsin where a group formed a preservation society.  So, in 1978,  when Hollywood Boulevard was not an appealing place, she thought a solution might lie in a historic preservation group to alert the citizens and politicians of the historic treasures located here.  With John Anson Ford and four dedicated ladies, they became Hollywood Heritage, Inc., a 501c3 organization proudly helping to save many artifacts of Hollywood’s local history.  They restored and still maintain the Hollywood Heritage Museum in the DeMille-Lasky barn, where “The Squaw Man”, Hollywood’s first feature length film, was made.  Today they are restoring “Jualita”, the Wattles mansion, which is the last of the midwesterner’s summer estates located in Hollywood.

Marian’s activities have drawn world-wide publicity because of the fame of Hollywood, even having been honored by the President of the United States, but she is quick to point out that she is, “just one of the volunteers who loves our town enough to work to protect its history and the great future it deserves.”

Marian is an old Ohioan, born and educated in the Cleveland-Akron area.  Her business life has been as a manufacturer’s agent along with her husband.  They were blessed with two wonderful children, who sadly, preceded them in death, but left behind three wonderful grandchildren. She has wonderful memories...so many that she is writing a book about the grand times her family shared.

Dorothy Thompson - 2006 Honoree of Hollywood Chamber Community Foundation 13th Annual ‘Women of Distinction’ Luncheon.DOROTHY THOMPSON
April 29, 1992 will be forever remembered as a day of fear and upheaval, as Los Angeles was shaken by citywide riots that altered the way many people viewed the structure and stability of our society. Once the fires and turmoil died down, most went back to their daily routines, feeling that someone else would fix the problems. However, for commercial TV producer, Dorothy Thompson, the event made an impact that caused her to alter her life and to create the Streetlights Production Assistant Program, an organization which is helping to change the face of the Entertainment Industry.

Dorothy is the founder and Executive Director of Streetlights. After the riots, by using her savings and credit cards, she formed the organization whose mission is to create ethnic diversity within the entertainment industry. She and her staff accomplish this by providing job training and placement to economically and socially at-risk young men and women. Streetlights’ training programs provide talented minorities with entry-level work as production assistants in film and television, as well as career advancement opportunities.

Though donations were few and far between at the start, Dorothy secured a hard won Federal grant, with Hollywood not far behind in rewarding Streetlights’ efforts. Companies such as Universal Pictures, DreamWorks/SKG, Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Crossroads Films, Sony Pictures, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation have acknowledged the program with their highest praise, jobs for the trainees and funding for the program.

The Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon benefits the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, which has given over $350,000 to Hollywood charities since 1998. The Foundation would like to thank all the sponsors for this event. At the Friend level are Jeff Briggs Law, Capitol Records, Honda of Hollywood and Ramsey Shilling.
