Hollywood Economic Development

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce works closely with the community, new developers and financial investors on projects which are important to Hollywood’s revitalization. Below is a list of Hollywood’s Economic Development Update on major projects in Hollywood currently in development. For your convenience, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee has also mapped the location of these projects on an annual map of Hollywood Economic Development.

COMMERCIAL/RETAIL/ATTRACTIONS

1. ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS & SCIENCES MUSEUM
Address: 1313 N. Vine Street
The Motion Picture Academy has plans for a world-class, $400-million museum surrounding their Pickford Center in Hollywood. Acquisition of all property has been completed. Construction start is hoped for in 2012, with completion in 2014. (310)247-3000.

2. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS
Address: 1782 N. Orange
Construction began in May 2008 on a 1,500-sq.ft. expansion of ASC’s historic headquarters building and construction of an adjacent 2,500-sq.ft. administrative building. Completion expected by end of 2009. (323)969-4333.

3. BOULEVARD 6200
Developer: Clarett Hollywood LLC
Location: Hollywood Blvd. between Argyle and El Centro
Developer plans 175,000-sq.ft. of neighborhood serving retail space as part of a $400-million mixed-use development. Fully entitled. To be built in two phases. (310)807-8405.

4. CAMDEN DEVELOPMENT
Developer: Camden Property Trust
Location: 1540 N. Vine St.
Developers proposed a 61,000-sq.ft. Whole Foods Market and 306 apartments as part of a $240-million, mixed-use project. Development is on hold pending improved market conditions. Fully entitled. (949)790-6120.

5. HOLLYWOOD & HIGHLAND
Owner: CIM Group
Address: 6801 Hollywood Blvd.
Cirque du Soleil has signed to open at the Kodak Theatre at the end of 2010 with their only resident show in L.A. Hard Rock Los Angeles restaurant has also announced to locate in 20,000-sq.ft. being vacated by Virgin Megastore. (323)817-0220.

6. HOLLYWOOD & VINE PROJECT
Developers: Legacy Partners and Gatehouse Capital
Location: Hollywood Blvd. at Argyle
This landmark project will include approximately 61,500-sq.ft. of ground-level retail space (including a Trader Joe’s), a W Hotel, residential and an intermodal transit plaza with 1,311 parking spaces. Groundbreaking occurred in February 2007. Completion – fall 2009. (949)930-6600.

7. MADAME TUSSAUDS
Developer: Steve Ullman/Larry Worchell
Address: 6931 Hollywood Blvd.
Madame Tussauds Hollywood is under construction on a 44,274-sq.ft. entertainment space. Opening August 2009, with 94 on-site and 136 off-site parking spaces. (323)463-2739.

8. PASEO PLAZA
Developer: Continental Management
Address: 5601 Santa Monica Blvd.
Entitlements have been received for a mixed-use project in the block surrounding Sears, that would include 377,000-sq.ft. of retail space and 437 residential units. Estimated value $325-million. Construction start on phase one to begin 1st quarter 2010. (310)253-9998.

9. SPACE 15 TWENTY
Developer: Root Development
Address: 1520 Cahuenga
A 23,000-sq.ft. rehab of existing buildings opened in November 2008, featuring Urban Outfitters as its anchor store, occupying 12,690-sq.ft. (310)710-6442.

10. TARGET
Developer: Target Corp.
Location: 5520 Sunset Blvd., SW corner of Sunset and Western Ave.
Target Corp. has acquired a 7-acre site and plans a new Target store, and 30,000-sq.ft. of additional retail. In entitlement phase. Construction start expected mid-2010, with occupancy in July 2011.

11. WESTERN AVENUE GATEWAY
Developer: CIM Group
Location: Hollywood Blvd. between Western and Garfield/Northside
CIM will develop 30,000-sq.ft. of retail space and 450 parking spaces, in addition to residential.

12. 6904 HOLLYWOOD BLVD.
Developer: CIM Group
CIM is completing a rehab and addition to the Nash Building that would bring the building to 46,800-sq.ft. Zara will occupy 14,253-sq.ft. and is expected to open summer 2009. Third floor will be offices. (323)860-4900.

 


EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

13. EMERSON COLLEGE
Developer: Emerson College
Address: 5960 Sunset Blvd.
Boston-based Emerson College plans to build a permanent campus for its 20-year old L.A. program, now located in Burbank. The multi-story building will include student housing, classrooms, stage(s) and retail at ground level, with a total of 145,000-sq.ft. May be built in one or two phases. 14. HELEN BERNSTEIN HIGH SCHOOL
Developer: L.A. Unified School District
Location: Sunset at Van Ness Ave.
L.A. Unified opened new high school on the 12.4-acre former Metro Media property in fall 2008. Project is valued at $100-million, of which $31-million was for land acquisition. (213)482-0752.

15. LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE
Developer: L.A. Community College District
Address: 855 N. Vermont
L.A. City College is a massive construction zone with numerous projects underway. Already completed are: a $52.3-million parking structure with 960 parking spaces and physical education fields on the roof, a $23-million library, and a $13.5 million child development center. A $52.3-million science and technology building is expected to be completed fall 2009. A $27.5-million health, fitness and physical education building breaks ground in fall 2009, and the new, $42-million Student Union building, the first design-build structure in the college district, will break ground in 2010. 16. COLUMBIA SQUARE

Developers are planning for a 125-room boutique hotel, as part of a mixed-use project, with residential, office and retail. In entitlement phase. (323)634-4865

17. HIGHLAND CENTER

Location: NE corner of Selma and Highland
Developers are planning a project with a mix of uses, including hotel, retail, residential and office space. (949)474-0122.

18. HOLLYWOOD & CAHUENGA:
A New Luxury Hotel
Developer: SPBB, LLC
Address: 6381 Hollywood Blvd.
The historic 1921 Security Bank Building will be restored to its original glory and transformed into a new 78-room, luxury boutique hotel. Will include an upscale restaurant, roof-top swimming pool and café/bar, retail and new parking garage. Construction start – fall 2010. (213)612-4585.

19. MILLENNIUM HOLLYWOOD
Developers: Millennium Partners and Argent Ventures
Location: Vine Street between Hollywood Blvd. and Yucca St.
This 1.2-million sq.ft. mixed-use development honors the Capitol Records building and includes a luxury hotel as well as class-A office space and condominiums highlighted by meandering green belts and open space. Construction start 2011. (323)313-3777.

20. SELMA HOTEL
Developer: 6417 Selma LLC
Address: 6417 Selma Ave.
Transformation is planned of an existing parking garage into a 136-room boutique hotel. Proposal is for a nine-story hotel, including restaurant/ballroom facilities. Adjacent alley will be redesigned with outdoor dining and landscaping to create an urban oasis. Fully entitled. Ground breaking hoped for by end of 2009, subject to financing.

21. 4900 Hollywood Blvd.

A 200-225 room extended-stay hotel is being proposed as part of a mixed-use project in East Hollywood adjacent to Hollywood’s medical facilities. In entitlement phase. (310)475-4599.

60. 1800 Argyle

Developers propose 213-room hotel, with 11 guest room floors, a restaurant, and meeting rooms on top of a podium containing hotel lobby and common area. In entitlement phase. (949)474-0122.

 


MEDICAL FACILITIES

22. CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Developer: Children’s Hospital
Address: 4650 Sunset Blvd.
Children’s Hospital will complete a massive renovation of their campus when their new 460,000-sq.ft., 317-bed hospital building is finished in 2010, at a cost estimated to approximate $582-million. (323)361-4121.

23. LOS ANGELES MEDICAL CENTER
Developer: Kaiser Permanente

The Los Angeles Medical Center’s new 792,000-sq.ft. hospital opened in spring 2009, at a cost in excess of $600-million. Work continues on decommissioning of old hospital. (323)783-4496.

24. AMETRON BUILDING

Developers plan a major mixed-use project that will take up an entire block and restore the historic CBS building. 26. DELUXE LABORATORIES

29. PANTAGES OFFICE TOWER

32. 1601 N. VINE STREET

33. 7060 HOLLYWOOD BLVD.

34. FIRE STATION 82

Construction has begun on a $30-million, 32,000-sq.ft. fire station. Completion expected in 2011.

Long-awaited, 457-space parking garage with 2,500-sq.ft. of retail space is out to bid. Construction start expected in October 2009.

36. EAST

CalAsian, family-style restaurant with gourmet cuisine under construction.

New 20,000-sq.ft. restaurant with live concert area and retail shop will open in 2010, replacing the Virgin Megastore at Hollywood & Highland.

37. THE MERCANTILE WINE BAR & ARTISINAL MARKET DISTRICT RESTAURANT

These two new venues are under construction, with openings planned fall 2009.

38. TENDER GREENS
Address: SE corner of Sunset & Vine
A 3rd quarter 2009 opening is planned for this restaurant in the newly renovated Sunset Vine Tower.
